India has produced 256.90 lakh tonnes of sugar, with around 19 sugar mills still operational as of April 30, Indian Sugar and Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) said in a statement on Thursday.
As per ISMA, currently, around 10 sugar mills are still operational in Uttar Pradesh, of which 8 are located in Western UP. These mills are expected to continue operations for another 7 to 10 days. Improved yield of plant cane has enhanced the cane availability in Uttar Pradesh enabling some mills to continue their operations. Additionally, improved sugar recovery in the second half of the season has resulted in better output of sugar.
Around 8 mills are currently operating main season in Tamil Nadu. While, in Maharashtra, one sugar mill in Pune district is expected to remain in operation upto 2nd week of May 2025. Accordingly, the main season is still expected to contribute to sugar production in the month of May 2025.
Some factories in South Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will restart their operations during the special season from June / July to September 2025 and it will further help to add the production.
According to the ISMA, historically, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu collectively contribute around 4 – 5 lakh tonnes of sugar in the special season.
