Pune: Sugarcane crushing season in Maharashtra is at its peak with lakhs of cane cutters are on duty to harvest the cane grown in the fields. As on 29 November 2020, 157 sugar mills commenced cane crushing operations and by crushing 175.18 lakh tonnes sugarcane produced 150.92 lakh quintals sugar with a recovery rate of 8.62 per cent.
The sugar mills are ensuring that the cane harvesters are protected from coronavirus pandemic. Sugar mills are distributing hand sanitisers to ensure the safety of the cane workers and employees associated with the mill.
The area under sugarcane cultivation this year has been increased due to favourable climate conditions.
