17.50 lakh rupees fraud for cane cutting

Kolhapur: Shirol police have in two separate cases booked two contractors for allegedly taking advance of Rs 17.50 lakh from two people for providing cane cutting labourers but turning away from the promise.

In one case, Prashant Vitthal Patil, resident of Arjunwad in Shirol taluka paid Rs 8.75 lakh as advance to the alleged accused who promised him to provide labourers to cut sugarcane. However, after taking money he went absconding and did not turn up.

Patil said he had borrowed Rs 8.75 lakh from a bank after securing a guarantee from Datta Cooperative sugar mill to provide workers for cutting sugarcane and signed an agreement with the accused. He transferred money into the accused account. But he failed to send any worker. Realising that he has been duped, Patil lodged a complaint with Shirol police.

In another incident, victim transferred Rs 8.75 lakh to the account of another contractor who promised to come with the labourers to cut sugarcane crop. However, he also did not turn up.

A police official from Shirol police station talking to Times of India said, “We are investigating the case and will soon arrest the suspects involved in cheating the duo.”
