Sao Paulo: Tereos, the French sugar manufacturer, announced on Friday that its sugar production in Brazil experienced a notable 19% growth during the 2023-2024 season, surpassing expectations due to enhanced sugarcane crushing efficiency.
A significant portion, specifically 67%, of the company’s sugarcane was allocated for the production of sugar, resulting in an overall output of approximately 1.9 million metric tons of the sweetener. The crushing activities at Tereos’ six operational units in Brazil, primarily situated in the northwest of Sao Paulo state, reached a total of 21.1 million tons. This marked a substantial 22% increase compared to the previous year and exceeded the initial estimate of 19 million tons made at the beginning of the harvest.
Pierre Santoul, the Head of Tereos in Brazil, attributed this success to favorable weather conditions and various enhancements implemented by the company. He stated, “With the favorable weather conditions and various improvements we implemented… we achieved a historic result, reaching record crushing.”
Highlighting the positive trajectory, Santoul expressed confidence in the forthcoming harvest, stating, “Given ongoing initiatives to improve productivity, Tereos maintains positive prospects for the 2024-25 harvest.”
In addition to the surge in sugar production, Tereos witnessed a 20% growth in its production of sugarcane-based ethanol, reaching a volume of 580 million liters. Furthermore, the electricity generated from sugarcane biomass in the season experienced a 7% increase, reflecting the company’s diversified and sustainable approach to its operations.
