Pune: The non-availability of sugarcane has affected the current crushing season in Maharashtra. Because of this many sugar mills in the state stopped crushing operations early.
As per data from Maharashtra Sugar Commissionerate, till 12th March 2020 overall 50 sugar mills in the state have closed their operations. Which include 14 mills in Aurangabad, 9 mills in Ahmednagar, 5 mills in Pune, 8 mills in Solapur, 8 mills in Kolhapur, 4 mills in Nanded and 2 mills in Amravati district. Yet, no sugar mills in Nagpur stopped crushing operations.
Flood and drought have also affected the sugar output in Maharashtra. Till 12th March, 497.52 lakh tonnes sugarcane was crushed and produced 55.43 lakh tonnes of sugar with a recovery rate of 11.14 per cent.
In the current season, crushing in sugar mills commenced late. Mills officially started the season on November 22 after they got permission from state Governor BS Koshyari in the absence of a functional state government.
