Pune: Many sugar mills in Maharashtra are likely to shut crushing operations soon. The current season has been affected due to the non-availability of sugarcane.
As per data from Maharashtra Sugar Commissionerate, till 15th March 2020 overall 56 sugar mills in the state have closed their operations. Which include 17 mills in Aurangabad, 9 mills in Ahmednagar, 5 mills in Pune, 9 mills in Solapur, 8 mills in Kolhapur, 6 mills in Nanded and 2 mills in Amravati district.
Flood and drought have also affected the sugar output in the state. Till 15th March, 501.05 lakh tonnes sugarcane was crushed and mills produced 55.84 lakh tonnes of sugar with a recovery rate of 11.15 per cent.
Also the late commencement of crushing operations this season has affected the mills in the state. Sugar mills in the state officially kick-started crushing season on November 22 after they got permission from state Governor BS Koshyari in the absence of a functional state government.
