Goa: Sugarcane farmers demand written assurance for Sanjivani sugar mill commencement

Sanguem, Goa: Sugarcane farmers associated with the Sanjivani sugar mill have given 15 days ultimatum to the government to decide over the compensation for the upcoming crop season.

According to the media report, sugarcane cultivators from Wadem-Kurdi in Sanguem demanded a written assurance from the government stating that the mill will commence the crushing season this year. The farmers have demanded compensation for 10 years if the government fails to start the mill.

The farmers claim that the closure of the sugar mill will not only affect the sugarcane cultivators but will also affect the large number of people that depend on this sugar mill including workers, tractor and truck owners, labourers and drivers.

The mill is facing a financial crisis due to a lack of adequate supply of cane. The farmers and employees from the mill are against shutting it. The mill has registered a loss due to unavailability of sugarcane and various reason.
