We have to ensure clean and green sugar industry through technological interventions: Joint Secretary (Sugar & Administration) in online training programme

Lucknow: Three days online training programme on “ETP Operation and Effluent Analysis” organized by National Sugar Institute commenced today. Shri Anoop Kumar Kanaujia, Assistant Professor and Convener while welcoming the Chief Guest introduced the theme of the three days training programme.

Inaugurating the programme, Shri Subodh Kumar Singh, IAS, Joint Secretary (Sugar & Administration), Government of India call upon the sugar factories for taking effective steps for waste management in order to maintain the eco-system in the larger interest of the society. Sugar industry has gone a long way in improvising its working in all spheres but still there is need to improvise on fresh water usage to conserve the natural resources. We have to ensure a clean and green sugar industry through technological interventions, removing the tag of a polluting industry by 2030, he added.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Narendra Mohan, Director, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur stressed upon importance to conserving the water so as to reduce fresh water consumption and lowering effluent generation. At present, the fresh water consumption in sugar factories is about 10-15 liters/ton on sugarcane crushed and a meagre 10% reduction may result in fresh water savings to the extent of 30 million cum per year. We have to work on setting up small treatment plants at various unit operations to treat and recycle the water as per its quality rather than sending all the waste water as effluent to main Effluent Treatment Plant. The surplus condensates from various heat exchangers can be recycled after desired treatment.  The sugar factories are required to create “Environment Cells” to monitor and minimize the pollution, he said.

Shri J. P Srivastava, Consultant, while presenting the details of guidelines issued by Central Pollution Control Board in respect of quantity and quality of waste water discharge from sugar factories, stressed upon installation of “Online Continuous Emission & Effluent Monitoring Systems” so as to continuously keep a watch on discharges. While it is important for Sulphitation Sugar Factories to install “Sulphate Removal System”, the Sugar Refineries carrying out de-colorization through “Ion Exchange Columns” have to go in two-stage brine recovery system, he stressed. Dr. Vishnu Prabhakar Srivastava, Asstt. Professor Organic Chemistry, in his lecture, demonstrated details of standard protocols to be maintained for analysis of various quality parameters viz. BOD, COD, pH, TSS, oil and grease etc. It is not only the correct procedure but also the use of standard calibrated instruments which is important for accurate results, he added.
