Pune: As a step towards reducing the sugar output, sugar mills in Maharashtra are planning to divert sugarcane for ethanol production. It will help mills to reduce the sugar surplus.
According to the news reports, millers met at Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) in Pune on Friday and discussed ways on diverting 10 lakh tonne sugarcane towards ethanol production.
Sanjay Khatal, MD Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factories Production, said that increasing ethanol production will not only help in reducing sugar output but also ease sugarcane payments to farmers.
To strengthen the financial condition of sugar mills and cut oil imports, the Government is emphasising on ethanol production. In this season, Maharashtra is expected to produce bumper sugarcane, so if mills go for ethanol production then it will help them to reduce sugar surplus.
