Colombo, Sri Lanka: If the traders fail to pass on the benefits of the price reduction to the consumers, we will impose sugar tax, said Sri Lanka’s Trade minister Bandula Gunawardana.
The government in October had scrapped the import duty on sugar that had resulted in the reduction in the commodity prices.
According to the media report, the sugar should be now sold at Rs 85 per kg. The people have however claimed that the sugar is sold at Rs 135 per kg.
Asela Sampath, president of the Sri Lanka Canteen Owner’s Association said that the benefit of the reduction in sugar prices has not been passed on to the consumers.
