Kenya: Sugarcane farmers associated with Nzoia sugar mill have demanded an investigation in a recent incident of fire that damaged property worth Sh 12 million on last Thursday.
According to the local media reports, farmers alleged that the incident could be an in-house job disguised as an accident so that the management could find an excuse to not clear cane dues.
Farmers said, “We are not satisfied with the explanations provided by the mill management and want an independent investigation by the security agency.”
Wanjala Makokha, managing director of the mill said: “The fire was started by a hot steam pipe that ignited bagasse at the mill turbine before spreading through the electric cables affecting another mill turbine and the bagasse rubber conveyor belt.”
