Improved sugar supply and increased efficiency in private sugar mills have led to record sugar output in Kenya as compared with the last four years.
The data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows that the 459,972 metric tonnes of sugar was produced from January to September this year. This is the highest sugar production during the given period since 2016.
In 2019, the sugar millers produced 336,114 metric tonnes of sugar in the first nine months. This year the sugar output has increased by 37 per cent compared with last year.
The favourable environment, good rainfall in the sugarcane growing region including in Western Kenya has boosted the cane output which ultimately has increased sugar output.
The country witnessed 5.18 million metric tonnes of sugarcane in the first nine months of the year.
