The Zimbabwe government has put restrictions on the import of sugar to boost the domestic industry to meet the local consumer needs. The Minister of Finance and Economic Development Professor Mithuli Ncube announced the National Budget in 2021 in which he stated that the sugar is exempted from the Open General Import Licence.
Ncube said, “We have excluded the commodity from importation under the Open General Import Licence to encourage the domestic sugar producers. This will increase the use of local production at confectioneries and beverages.”
“Government is promoting the export of products having sugar as the main ingredient. The Ministry of Industry and Commerce will issue an import license for use of sugar in such products. This will help the manufacturers to take advantage of this provision and increase the export of sweets,” he further added.
