Chennai: The state government has initiated the assessment of the crop loss caused due to the cyclone Nivar in Tamil Nadu.
The cyclone crossed the coast on November 26 between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and impacted 18 districts including Chengalpattu, Chennai, Ariyalur, Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai.
“We will submit the estimates of the crop loss to the chief minister K Palaniswami for the action on it,” said a government official.
The crop loss in the Ranipet district is estimated around Rs 3.10 crore as per the preliminary assessment. The crops grown over 5,734 acres of area have been completely damaged.
The damaged crops were inspected by district collector A R Gladstone Pushparaj at Nandivalam, Puthuppadi and Chittanji villages. Apart from sugarcane, other crops including paddy, pulses and groundnut were also damaged due to cyclone Nivar.
The Tamil Nadu Farmers Association has appealed to the government to ensure the assistance so that the farmers could recover their losses.
