Sugar mills in the country produced 108.55 lakh tonnes of sugar till December 31, nearly 39 per cent more than 78.30 lakh tonnes more than the production in the corresponding period last year, National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) said in a report on Saturday.
While 120 mills in Uttar Pradesh produced 33 lakh tonnes of sugar as 33 lakh tonnes produced by 119 mills in the same period last year, the sugar production in Maharashtra where 179 mills are currently crushing, was 40 lakh tonnes. The State, which commenced crushing later last year due to lower availability of sugarcane, produced only 16.50 lakh tonnes in the same period.
Sugar production in Karnataka – the third largest sugar producing State produced 23.40 lakh tonnes with 65 mills crushing whereas in the last year 63 mills produced 16.35 lakh tonnes of sugar.
Other sugar-producing states contributed another 8.95 lakh tonnes of sugar.
