Pending cane dues: Sugarcane farmers warn of agitation

Ambala, Punjab: Sugarcane farmers associated with the Naraingarh Sugar Mills are still awaiting the pending cane dues worth Rs 70 crore. The farmers have threatened to launch an agitation if their dues are not cleared on time.

According to the media report, farmers claim that for the ongoing crushing season, the mill has not yet paid cane bills worth Rs 68 crore and Rs 1.44 crore from the last crushing season. Seeking the pending payments, a group of farmers yesterday held a meeting in front of Naraingarh sugar mills.

According to the TribuneIndia.com, Malkit Singh, BKU (Charuni) district head said, “The farmers are forced to request the officials and hold agitations to get the money released which is not acceptable. The mill should clear the dues at the earliest.”

A mill official said that the lower price of sugar in the market is leading to the delay in cane payments.

Vaishali Sharma, SDM Naraingarh said, “We have assured them that dues of the last season of around Rs 1.44 crore will be cleared on Monday and payment of the ongoing season will start from next week.”
