Karachi: The prices of sugar in retail markets have risen to Rs 105-110 per kg in Karachi as against Rs 95-100 per kg last week. The consumers from Quetta are paying Rs 105-106 per kg against Rs 95-97 last week.
Farid Qureshi, General Secretary, Karachi Retail Grocers Group (KRGG) said that the wholesale rate of sugar is Rs 97 per kg. According to Anis Majeed of Karachi Wholesalers Grocers Association (KWGA) the retailers are looting people by selling sugar at Rs 105-110 per kg.
Majeed blamed the government for mismanagement of the commodity. Despite the inquiry report relating to the price irregularities of sugar last year, the government has not taken any action on it, he said.
The country imported 278,482 tonnes of sugar to cater the domestic need and keep prices under control.
