Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government on Saturday said that an amount of Rs 198.64 crore has been given to the public and cooperative sugar mills to clear the pending cane dues of the sugarcane farmers.
Swami Yatishwaranand, the state Minister for Sugarcane Development and Sugar Industries said that the amount was allocated after Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat was made aware of the situation.
The amount of Rs 198.64 crore has been transferred to the bank accounts of the Doiwala, Kichcha, Bajpur and Nadehi sugar mills and has asked them to clear the cane bills of farmers, he said.
After so many years, it is the first time that the farmers will receive the payment soon after the completion of the cane crushing season.
“The COVID-19 situation has badly affected the farmers and the government is committed to address their problems. For the first time in two decades this kind of urgency has been shown in clearing the cane bills of the farmers,” he said.
