Lucknow: Sugarcane crushing season in Uttar Pradesh is in the final phase as the majority of sugar mills have closed their operations.
According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), four sugar mills are still operating in the state. Mills have produced 110.16 lakh tonnes of sugar till May 31 which is 15.30 lakh tonnes less than the sugar produced in the last season (125.46 lakh tonnes) on the same corresponding date. Out of 120 mills that operated this year, 116 mills have ended their crushing and only 4 mills continue their operations as compared to 14 mills that operated last year on the corresponding date.
Sugarcane crushing season in the Western region of the state was extended as the jaggery and Khandsari units were closed due to the coronavirus pandemic and the farmers were left with no option but to send their cane to the sugar mills for crushing.
