Dar es Salaam: The Bagamoyo Sugar Ltd project of the Said Salim Bakhresa Group of Companies (SSBG) worth $300 million (about Sh690 billion) will start operations from June 2022.
Hussain Sufian, director, Bakhresa Group corporate affairs said that the company has so far spent around $100 million (Sh 230 billion) for the construction of the project in the first phase.
“The first phase of the construction will cost around $110 million and we are giving a finishing touch to the civil works. The installation of machines will start soon and it will take around 6 to 9 months,” he said.
Sufian said, “The installation work is expected to be completed by December this year and we will start trials of sugar production. The commercial production will begin from June 2022.”
The project, which has three phases, is expected to start with an installed capacity of between 30,000 tonnes and 35,000 tonnes. It can go up to an annual production capacity of 100,000 tonnes upon completion of all three phases.
“The completion of the Bagamoyo Sugar Ltd will generate around 800 to 1000 direct jobs,” he further added.
