Malaysia: Sugar demand stable despite lockdown

Kuala Lumpur: The extension of the nationwide lockdown and imposition of the third Movement Control Order (MCO 3.0) has not impacted the demand for refined sugar, said Syed Feizal Syed Mohammad, group chief executive officer, MSM Malaysia Holding Bhd.

The demand for refined sugar will increase once the national vaccination programmes speed up, he said.

During virtual media question and answer session in conjunction with the national refined sugar producer’s 10th annual general meeting, he said, “Despite two lockdowns in the country the sugar consumption remained stable.”

“We have expanded the capacity at the MSM Sugar Refinery (Johor) Sdn Bhd (MSM Johor) that will help us to meet the domestic need and will be able to export sugar,” Syed Feizal said.

“MSM Johor has widened the group’s export market footprint by expanding into potential regional markets such as China, Indonesia, Vietnam and New Zealand.,” he concluded.
