Muzaffarnagar: Bhartiya Kisan Union national president Naresh Tikait has described the sugarcane FRP hike as “inadequate” in comparison to the rise in prices of petrol and diesel.
He was speaking after the Union government decided to increase FRP for sugarcane by Rs 5 per quintal for the forthcoming crushing season 2021-22 taking the FRP to Rs 290 per quintal. The government has however ruled out any possibility of increasing the selling price of sugar.
“The hike of Rs 5 per quintal is very less when compared to the hike in prices of petrol and diesel. The government should fix FRP taking into consideration the rise in the prices of petrol, diesel and the input cost for the cane cultivation,” Tikait said.
Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal said that the government’s decision will benefit around 5 crore sugarcane farmers.
