Bengaluru: Ahead of the state legislature session which is scheduled to commence on September 13, sugarcane farmers from Karnataka have threatened to launch agitation at Vidhana Soudha if the government fails to revise the fair and remunerative price (FRP) for sugarcane.
As per a news report published in Thehindu.com, farmers have stated that the recent hike of FRP by Rs 50 per tonne is meagre and they are at a loss if the mills pay them at this rate. Kurubur Shanthakumar, president of the Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers’ Association said that with the government’s hike in FRP, the cane price reaches to Rs 2,900 per tonne.
He said,“The cane prices have remained almost stable in last three years as the government has not hiked the FRP. During the same period, the prices of fertilizers and fuel have doubled increasing the input costs for cane cultivation.”
“Our demand is to hike the FRP, so the farmers also gain profit”, farmer leader further added.
