Muzaffarnagar: 42,000 farmers switched to sugarcane farming in last five year

Muzaffarnagar: The sugarcane yield in the district has been increasing since the last five years as around 42,000 cane farmers have shifted to the new crop variety for cultivation.

According to the news report published in The Times of India, District cane officer R D Dwivedi said, “After discovering a new variety seed of the cane, called ‘0238’, the recovery rate of the sugarcane has increased. Earlier, farmers used to get 50 quintals from one bigha land. Now they are getting 70 quintals.”

Earlier 1.6 lakh farmers were growing cane now more than two lakh farmers are growing the new variety of cane, he said.

The area under cane cultivation has increased to 168,015 hectares in 2021-22 from 1, 26,872 hectares in 2016-17. The area under cane cultivation has increased by 42,596 hectares in the last five years.
