“Indian sugar factories may develop facilities to produce and export speciality sugars in overseas market”

Kanpur: Shri Sudhanshu Pandey, Secretary (Food & Public Distribution), Government of India, visited National Sugar Institute, Kanpur to see the various ongoing academic, research and other activities of the institute. He visited Experimental Sugar Factory, Speciality Sugar Division, Ethanol Unit and various other laboratories besides the academic section, particularly, the newly constructed “Interactive Seminar Room” and other “Smart Class Rooms”.

He showed keen interest to know the process of production of various speciality sugars, such as, icing sugar, brown sugar, flavoured and liquid sugars which are in much demand by the confectionary and bakery sectors. The world market of such sugars is at present dominated by Mauritius and Indian sugar factories may develop facilities to produce and export such sugars in Overseas market. National Sugar Institute can take a lead in providing the technology to the industry, he said.

Shri Sudhanshu Pandey, Secretary (Food & Public Distribution) appreciated the efforts being made by National Sugar Institute in developing various value added products like Vanilin, Dietary Fibre and Surfactants from by-products and waste from sugar industry. Shri Narendra Mohan, Director, National Sugar Institute detailed about development of technology for producing sulphur-less sugar using carbon di-oxide from distillery fermenters. By doing so not only emission of greenhouse gas into atmosphere can be prevented but the Indian Sugar Industry can save 1.8 Lakh Metric tonnes of sugar per annum. (Food & Public Distribution) advised Director, National Sugar Institute for making efforts to take the technologies from lab to land for commercial exploitation.

Later on, while addressing the staff and students of the institute, he called upon the students to keep pace with fast changing technological scenario and to prove themselves as competent “Process Managers”. The sugar industry is going through a phase changes for its sustainability and hence quality of sugar and utilization of by-products for ethanol and other value added products has assumed greater significance. With such innovative products and diversification the sugar factories can enhance their revenues significantly thus benefitting all stakeholders, he said.

Secretary (Food &Public Distribution) also interacted with senior officials from various sugar groups viz. M/s Bajaj Sugars Ltd., M/s Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd., M/s Dalmia Sugar Mills Ltd., M/s Simbhaoli Sugars Ltd. and M/s DCM Shri Ram Sugars Ltd. for clearing the payment of sugarcane farmers. He also directed them to work for achieving the ethanol blending target and export of sugar to the extent of 60 Lakh Metric Tonnes during 2021-22.
