The projected shortfall of the sugar output in the country has led the Philippines to decide not to export raw sugar to the United States. The Department of Agriculture reiterated its stand on Monday in a virtual briefing.
Agriculture Secretary William Dar said, “We are in no longer position to export raw sugar to the US. The domestic production would be used to meet local needs.”
Earlier the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) had revised the export forecast from 140,000 metric tons (MT) to zero for marketing year (MY) 2021-2022.
The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has also issued an order to classify all domestic market sugar as “B” for domestic consumption for crop year 2021-2022.
The USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service in the Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) report stated that the Philippine’s sole exporter for raw sugar was the US in recent years.
