Saharanpur: As pressure is mounting on the government over pending sugarcane payment, it is in no mood to spare sugar mills. With each passing days, states like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh are witnessing agitation by various farmers organisation.
Taking a strong action on millers, Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Minister Suresh Rana on January 30 warned them that FIR would be lodged, if they fail to clear the dues of sugarcane farmers.
According to news agency UNI, holding a review meeting with senior officials and sugar mill owners, Rana said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was more concerned about the farmers’ issues, adding that the state government has cleared all dues of sugar mills, including of previous session.
It has been more than two months, and yet many mills have not cleared the pending dues. The millers are citing their inability to pay farmers the pending payment as they been choked up with surplus stocks of sugar, low demand in the market, and no increment in the minimum selling price.
Sugar mills of Sarsava and Nanauta were instructed to clear the bills swiftly, said Rana, adding that corruption will not be tolerated in any case.
As per reports, mills in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have piled up almost Rs 11,000 crore in payment dues to farmers. The two states account for almost 75 per cent of the sugarcane grown in the country.
