Maharashtra’s sugar commissioner directs mills to ensure vaccination for migrant cane harvesters

Pune: Sugar mills in the state have been asked to take necessary steps to ensure that the sugarcane harvesters in their area get vaccinated for COVID-19.

According to the media report, the instructions in this regard have been issued by the state sugar commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad to the sugar mills.

The officials stated that around 5-6 lakh cane harvesters migrate from their native districts of Jalgaon, Ahmednagar, Nandurbar and Beed to the sugar mills across the state and they might miss their scheduled vaccination doses.

Several mills have initiated action on their own to ensure that these harvesters are vaccinated completely.

“We managed to procure vaccines by our own when government vaccines fell short,” said Bhairavnath Thombare, CMD of a mill that operates in Osmanabad and Yavatmal, reports The Indian Express.
