No sugar shortage in the country: Turkish minister

There will be no any sugar shortage in the country in 2022, said Turkey’s Trade Minister Mehmet Mus. He was speaking with the representatives of the sugar industry in Ankara.

Assuming favourable growing conditions, the sugar beet production in Turkey is expected to be 19.5 million metric tons (MMT) from the plantation grown over 320,000 hectares (ha) in 2021-22.

The beet and sugar production in Turkey has set a new record in 2020, with a $150 million export during the same period, stated the representatives from the sector.

In 2021, beet and sugar production was down due to climate change, they said. Following this, it was stated that if the country faces a shortage of sugar, the safety stock would be used to meet the shortage.

The representatives have stated that the sugar mills are losing money due to the lower sugar prices in the market and warned that if the factories are at loss, the sugar market would suffer.

Mus asked the mills to continue sugar production and assured them that their concerns would be conveyed to the appropriate parties.
