Brazil’s sugarcane crush expected to reach 562 million tonnes in 2022-23 season

Sap Paulo: Agribusiness consultancy Datagro stated on Friday that the center-south region of Brazil is likely to crush 562 million tonnes of sugarcane in 2022/23.

The crop is recovering this year from the lower output of 525 million tonnes last year due to drought and frost.

As per the news report published by Reuters, Plinio Nastari, President and Chief executive, Datagro said that a potential downward slope is expected from the current forecast as states such as Mato Grosso do Sul, Parana and Sao Paulo are suffering from irregular rainfall.

“The crop is in a critical development stage at present and the region is facing slant or no rains in the last few weeks. There is a reserve of water in the soil, but the rains need to come back,” he further added.

The sugarcane crop this season is likely to remain below the 605.5 million tonnes recorded in 2020/21 despite recovering from the previous cycle.
