Farmers urge government to bring sugarcane cultivation and sugar mills’ operations under digital infrastructure

Mysuru: Sugarcane farmers have urged the state government to follow the Uttar Pradesh model to bring sugarcane cultivation and sugar mills’ operation under digital infrastructure for the smooth operation of the sector, reports The Hindu.

Kurubur Shanthakumar, president of the Karnataka Sugarcane Growers Association said, “The use of the E Ganna app by sugar mills and cane growers in UP has helped the farmers receive their cane bills within 14 days of supplying crop. We want the government to implement a similar method here.”

He said, “The app helps farmers to upload all the details about their fields including the date of cultivation, and sowing and they get the details about the harvesting and transportation of sugarcane to the factories.”

“The government ensures that the profit earned from the sale of sugar, ethanol, and molasses goes to the cane farmers while in Karnataka the cane payment is delayed by three to five months,” Shanthakumar further added.

He was part of a delegation that visited UP to study the sugar and sugarcane sector in the state.
