Dar es Salaam: The Tanzanian government announced on Monday that it aims to end sugar imports by 2025.
Addressing the parliament in the capital Dodoma the Minister for Agriculture, Hussein Bashe, and the Minister for investment industry and Trade, Ashatu Kijaji made the announcement.
Kijaji said, “The government is creating an environment to attract investment in the sugar sector. Sugar milling is one of the top investments in the industrial sector.”
The annual domestic demand for sugar in the country is 470,000 tonnes and the current domestic production is 378,000 tonnes.
