Though Tanzania has agreed to lift the ban on sugar exports from Uganda, the Uganda Sugar Manufacturers Association has stated that they are facing barriers to exporting the commodity.
According to the associations the dealers are not able to export the sugar quota allocated to them.
Uganda was allocated to export 10,000 tonnes of sugar annually to Tanzania but the traders are not able to export that much amount of sugar to the country.
Jim Kabeho, chairman of the Uganda Sugar Manufacturers Association said, “Earlier we used to export 20,000 tonnes of sugar to Tanzania.”
Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu during her recent visit to Uganda stated that the country has allowed Uganda to supply sugar to meet the sugar deficit.
Tanzania had banned sugar imports from Uganda alleging that the sugar was originating from third-party countries.
