Bangladesh: Demand to provide special allocation in budget for sugar industry

Economists and labour leaders have urged the government to make a special allocation to the jute and sugar industries in the upcoming budget, reports The Business Standard.

They have stated that the sugar industry is struggling to survive due to a lack of investment and mismanagement.

Expressing their views at a seminar they demanded that despite temporary losses, the government should patronage the sugar sector to create market control and employment to provide essential food products.
Workers-farmers-students-people unity placed a seven-point demand at the seminar for the protection of sugar mills.

If the government invests around Tk1, 500 crores in the sugar industry it would turn around the sugar sector, said the labour leaders.
The continuous losses have compelled the government to close six state-owned sugar mills.

The workers’ unity has demanded to ensure accountability by modernizing the industries in the country and not handing them over to the private players.
