Ponda: The state government has disbursed the first installment of the compensation of Rs 2.08 crore to the 223 out of 700 plus sugarcane farmers, reports The Times of India (TOI).
The state government had announced that the cane farmers will be paid compensation for five years through a special assistance scheme after the closure of the Sanjivani sugar factory in 2019.
The farmers that have received compensation are from Sanguem (106), Canacona (50), Quepem (40), and Sattari (27).
According to the news report published in TOI, Factory administrator Chintamani Perni said that the government has sanctioned an amount of Rs 7.5 crore for the payment of the compensation amount and only those farmers who have submitted a declaration have been paid.
