Turkey to import 400,000 tonnes of sugar to cool rising prices

Taking steps to arrest rising domestic sugar prices, Turkey has decided to import 400,000 tons of sugar.

The government has published a presidential decree in the Official Gazette allowing the import of sugar and the customs duties will not be levied on it. The import license be valid till October 15, 2022.

According to officials, the sugar prices have skyrocketed in the country.
About 200,000 tonnes of sugar is consumed per month and the annual consumption is around 2.45 million tonnes.

The sugar sales in the local market between January and May have exceeded 2 million tonnes as against 1.45 million tonnes normally, they said.
