Ahmedabad: The state government and the labour and employment department have been issued notice by the Gujarat high court in connection with a PIL demanding revision of the minimum wage for sugarcane workers, reports The Times of India.
These workers are called koita in South Gujarat. The petitioner NGO, Mazdoor Adhikar Manch, filed the PIL through advocate Anand Yagnik and submitted the wage revision was to take place in 2020 according to statutory provisions as the state government last revised the minimum wage for sugarcane harvesters in 2015. The government revised minimum wages for agricultural workers but it did not revise the rates for sugarcane workers.
According to the news report published in The Indian Express, the notice has been kept returnable for June 30, by when the respondents are expected to make their submissions with respect to the contentions raised in the PIL.
