China to produce ethanol from coal, project starts trial

China has set up a coal-based ethanol project having an annual output of 500,000 tons which has now begun trial operation in Yulin City of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province on Thursday.

The plant will use coal as raw material to produce ethanol. It can convert 1.5 million tonnes of coal every year. According to experts, the project can save 1.5 million tons of bio-ethanol raw grain every year as three tons of grain can produce one ton of ethanol.

The carbonylation of dimethyl ether technique is used to produce ethanol in this project.
