Philippines: President rejects plan to import 300,000 tonnes of sugar

The Sugar Regulatory Administration’s plan of importing 300,000 tonnes of sugar has been rejected by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, informed the Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles.

The SRA has stated that the raw and refined sugar should be imported before November 30 as the sugar production for the crop year ending this month would fall 16% to 1.8 million metric tons.

The shortage of the commodity has driven inflation and the prices of sugar and drinks and beverages continue to soar since late 2018.
