Jalandhar: Sugarcane farmers have intensified their agitation against the government and sugar mills for pending cane dues. On Friday, they blocked the Jalandhar-Ludhiana stretch of the National Highway-1, reports The Indian Express.
Farmers protesting under the banner of the Bharti Kisan Union (Doaba) also received support from the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM). Farmers have given a deadline of August 25 to the government to clear pending cane dues else they have threatened to organise morcha in Phagwara.
Along with blocking NH-1, farmers blocked several major roads by parking their tractor-trolleys in the region as a part of their protest.
Farmers have been agitating since Monday over the alleged delay in payment of cane dues and stated that they will continue the agitation till they get their dues.
