Sugarcane farmers blocked the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway and staged a demonstration on the outskirts of the city on Friday to protest against the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane announced by the Centre, reports The Hindu.
Kurubur Shanthakumar, president, Sugarcane Cultivators Association, said, “The input costs including prices of fertilizers, pesticides, labour costs have increased manifold but the government has marginally increased FRP. With this hike, the government wants to convey to people that it is working for the betterment of farmers.”
“The government has hiked FRP for sugarcane from Rs 290 to Rs 305 per quintal. The recovery rate has increased from 10 per cent to 10.25 per cent. The farmerst will suffer additional financial loss on account of this change,” he further added.
Attacking MPs from Karnataka for not raising the issue in Parliament, he said that they are ineffective in raising the voice of farmers.
