Sugar shortage in the country is ‘Artificial’: Philippines government

The sugar shortage in the country is artificial and some traders are responsible for creating a supply gap by allegedly hoarding sweetener to earn profits, said the government.

As per the news release posted late Saturday on the Facebook page of the Office of the Press Secretary, during the weekend inspections, some 60,000 bags of suspected hoarded sugar from Thailand were found in warehouses.

“The sugar found in the warehouses in Luzon indicates that the sugar shortage is artificial,” said the release.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr is tackling the sugar shortage issue that has led to the spike in prices. He has taken several steps including directing retailers to cut sugar prices.
