Dhaka, Bangladesh: A parliamentary body heavily criticized Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun for being unable to arrest the rising sugar prices in the country despite adequate supply.
Sugar imports increased by 32% last month but the prices of sugar continued at a high rate in the wholesale as well as retail markets. The commodity in the retail market was sold at Tk 90-93 per kg yesterday, up from Tk 83-85 last month.
The prices of the commodity have increased from Tk 2,800-2,830 to Tk 3,050-3,080 per maund in one month.
The members of the Parliamentary standing committee on the industries blamed Humayun as well as Kamal Ahmed Mojumder, the state minister for industries for not being able to control the price rise.
The Parliamentary body has asked the ministers to take adequate steps to ensure that prices are brought under control.
