The area under-sugarcane cultivation in Bangladesh continues to shrink and the crop output has declined to half in the last two decades, reports The Daily Star.
According to the Bangladesh Economic Review 2022, production has reduced to 33.33 lakh tonnes in 2020-21 from 67.42 lakh tonnes in 2000-01. The area under cane cultivation during the same period fell from 4.17 lakh acres to 1.92 lakh acres.
The sugarcane production plunged by around 10% in FY21 compared to the preceding year. In FY 2019-20 farmers had grown 36.83 lakh tonnes of sugarcane in 2.13 lakh acres of land.
