Amritsar: Sugarcane farmers have agreed to lift their 28-day long dharana after they got assurance that their pending payment would be paid soon.
A meeting of farmer unions representatives and Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal held in Amritsar, in which the minister said that the government had received Rs 23.76 crore after selling property of the defaulting mill in Haryana and it will be used for paying pending cane dues of farmers soon.
Urmar MLA Jasvir Singh Raja assured the growers that the Agriculture Minister will hold a meeting with Chief Minister within a week and also with leaders of BKU (Doaba) on September 10 or 11 on the pending dues and other related issues.
Dhaliwal informed farmers that the government will ensure Phagwara sugar mill operates smoothly and if private players fail to run it then the state government would run the mill and farmers would not have to face any problem.
Farmers were agitating against a sugar mill based in Phagwara for pending cane dues worth Rs 72 crore.
