Sugar millers in Maharashtra have urged the Centre to announce an export policy for the 2022-23 sugar season.
According to the news report published in The Economic Times, West Indian Sugar Mills Association (Wisma), which represents sugar millers in the state, sent a letter to food and public distribution minister Piyush Goyal stating that this will help millers sign a forward contract for raw sugar exports.
“This will help the mills to avoid a glut in the domestic market as there is likely to be a record sugar production this season,” it further added.
At present the international market is favourable for Indian raw and white sugar.
To maintain the domestic availability and price stability of sugar, the government brought restrictions on sugar exports. As per the order issued by DGFT, with effect from 1st June, 2022 till 31st October, 2022, or till further order, whichever is earlier, the export of the sugar will be allowed with specific permission of the Directorate of Sugar, Department of Food and Public Distribution.
