Unseasonal rains affect paddy, sugarcane crops in North India

Heavy unseasonal rainfall in the northern parts of India has severely affected Kharif crops in several states, including early varieties of paddy, sugarcane and some vegetables.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Western UP received around 29.7 mm of rain on September 25 which was more than the normal rain. Districts like Bijnor, Meerut, Jyotibaphule Nagar, Bareilly and Etah received more than 500-1000% more rain than what they receive during the normal monsoon season. Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh received 41 mm of rainfall on September 25 which was 2,832% more than the normal daily rain.

The rainfall received in major parts of Punjab was 59.3 mm, which was 1,753% more than the normal daily rain.

Sudden heavy rainfall has caused waterlogging in the fields which would damage the cane crops, said Pritam Singh from Nekpur village in Bulandshahr district, UP.
