Phagwara sugar mill remains shut despite the assurance of revival

Jalandhar: The Golden Sandhar Mill in Phagwara is yet to start operations despite the assurance of Agriculture Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal announced last week that the government will ensure that the mill will start operations, reports Tribuneindia.

The mill set up in 1933 owes dues worth Rs 250 crore to the cane farmers, banks and the government.

The situation is such that no government official wants to get into trouble by making it operational. Even the private millers that had shown interest in operating mills earlier have backed out now.

Farmers around Nawanshahr, Hoshiarpur, Nakodar, Goraya, Phillaur and Phagwara areas are cultivating cane over 22,000 acres and are likely to produce 70 lakh quintals of cane and they want that the government should revive this sugar mill.

The government is planning to divert the cane from these farmers to neighbouring sugar mills.
