Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to continue with the existing open export policy instead of having a quota for sugar exports for 2022-23 season.
Shinde has sent a letter to the PM stating that the sugar mills of Maharashtra are against quota-based sugar exports as this will limit production. Shinde has requested him to intervene and direct the ministry of commerce, consumer protection and food and public affairs to take an appropriate decision.
He said, “The adoption of an open policy by the central government helped India to become the largest exporter of sugar in the world. It aid the mills to become financially stable and increase foreign exchange.”
“It is learnt that the quota system will be implemented for sugar exports from this year. This system allows factories that are not interested in exporting sugar to transfer their quota to other mills. This will create administrative hurdles and a lack of transparency. There will be no opportunity for free and fair trade,” Shinde further added in the letter.
