Nigeria aims to increase sugarcane cultivation

Nigeria has set a target to achieve self-sufficiency in sugarcane cultivation after attaining self-sufficiency in a sugar refinery.

The National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) has stated that it is taking efforts to increase sugar production above the consumption level. Sugar consumption in the country is around 1.7 million tonnes and now the country aims to increase it to 1.8 million tonnes.

In the last ten years Nigeria has increased its refinery capacity and now we aim to increase cane output, said Zecch Adedeji, executive secretary of the council.
